Impedimenta is the duelling staple that no fifth-year ever quite finishes practicing. The Latin impedimentum — obstacle, hindrance — gives the spell its name and its purpose. Cast at a moving target, the jinx slows them dramatically: mid-stride becomes mid-stride forever, mid-leap stalls in the air, mid-dash drops to a slow-motion crawl. The effect is brief — usually a few seconds of slowed motion before normal pace resumes — but a few seconds in a duel is forever.

Harry uses Impedimenta repeatedly during the third task of the Triwizard Tournament's Hedge Maze, against the various magical creatures and enchanted obstacles in his path. He uses it again in the Department of Mysteries against the Death Eaters chasing the DA through the rooms of the Ministry's Hall of Prophecy. It is exactly the kind of spell that tilts close fights — not a knockout, not a kill, just enough lost time on the opponent's side to land the next thing.

The Impediment Jinx is also one of the foundational spells of Dumbledore's Army's training. Harry teaches it as part of the basic offensive-defensive combination — Stupefy, Expelliarmus, Impedimenta — and the DA practiced it relentlessly in the Room of Requirement. By the time the group walked into the Department of Mysteries, every member could throw out a fast Impedimenta on instinct.

Like most jinxes of this class, Impedimenta is not Dark Magic and produces no lasting harm. It is a duelling tool, a tactical option, and a staple of Auror training. The cast itself is moderate difficulty; the targeting under pressure is what's hard.

Impedimenta FAQ

What does Impedimenta mean?+

From Latin impedimentum — obstacle, baggage, hindrance. The English word impede shares the same root.

How long does Impedimenta last?+

Briefly — usually a few seconds of significantly slowed motion before the target returns to normal pace. The cast doesn't permanently disable; it buys time. In a duel, that's often enough.

What's the counter-spell?+

Finite Incantatem will release the jinx immediately. Most casts are short enough that they wear off naturally before a counter-spell is needed.

When is Impedimenta taught at Hogwarts?+

Fifth-year Defence Against the Dark Arts curriculum. The DA also drilled it heavily as a foundational offensive-defensive tool, and most adult Aurors consider it a working staple.
